Equality Matters!

Hello, my name is Crystal and I am a Junior at Eastern Michigan University. I am attending college in order to obtain my Bachelors degree in Social Work. In addition to my BSW, I am also working on a pre-law program. One of the reasons that I want to go into the field of law is to help people who I feel have suffered some type of social injustice or are not being treated equally to others under the law. The main area I want to concentrate on is general human rights, which includes the LGBTQ community and Civil Rights. I believe that everyone in our society should be treated equally and given the same opportunities as everyone else is in their daily lives.
Part of what creates conflict in our society is that there is a barrier between heterosexuals and homosexuals due to people's lack of understanding about people who are different from themselves.  In my blog I will be discussing the concepts of gender, sexuality, and anti-war/ peace movements. I will be defining common terms that have to do with gender and sexuality, and I will talk about the struggle that homosexuals have gone through in order to be open about their sexuality in the military. Many of the policies regarding homosexual members of the military have either been recently repealed or enacted by President Obama. Hopefully in the future politicians will continue to support acts that create equality for everyone in our society. I look forward to researching this topic and I will share with you the new information that I have learned in my next post!
